Galvanization (or galvanisation) classically refers to any of several electrochemical processes named after the Italian scientist Luiqi Galvani. Now the term generally refers to an electrodepostion process used to add a thin layer of another metal to an item made of steel, in order to prevent rusting. More recently, though, the term has been broadened in common usage to include applying a protective metallic coating to an underlying piece of metal, using a process called hot-dip galvanization, which produces similar results, but which does not employ electrochemical deposition. 2.what's Hot-dip galvanizing? Hot-dip galvanizing is a form of galvanization. It is the process of coating iron, steel, or aluminum with a thin zinc layer, by passing the metal through a molten bath of zinc at a temperature of around 860 °F (460 °C). When exposed to the atmosphere, the pure zinc (Zn) reacts with oxygen to form zinc oxide, which further reacts with carbon dioxide to form zinc carbonate , a usually dull grey, fairly strong material that stops further corrosion in many circumstances, protecting the steel below from the elements.
